The Tree Seed Centre is an important facility that provides specialized seed handling services and facilitates research to reforest crown lands in British Columbia. The addition and renovation have expanded the facility’s operational capacity and improved building performance and resiliency.

This 4,900 square-foot addition substantially improves seed storage capabilities. Precise, reliable, and energy-efficient temperature and humidity controls were key considerations in designing and constructing the new and renovated storage areas. Our climate resiliency assessment identified a rise in summer peak temperatures as a significant risk. This was addressed in the building envelope, mechanical system, and backup generator design to ensure peak performance.

End-of-life mechanical systems for the existing coolers and freezers were replaced with efficient electrified equipment. The project was designed so that the existing coolers and freezers could remain in continuous operation during construction, necessitating a high degree of planning and coordination.

Upgrading the existing seed storage with a high-performance building envelope helps regulate interior temperature and humidity and reduces long-term operating costs. The structures are clad with locally sourced, charred cedar. A shingled pattern depicting pinecones references the building’s use and highlights local forestry products.

The scope of work includes full architectural services from pre-design through to construction administration, an integrated design process, and separate development and building permit applications. As part of pre-design services, an analysis of the spatial relationships and workflow processes was undertaken. Existing space plan challenges and new opportunities to improve the efficiency, comfort, and safety of operations were reviewed with staff and representatives from the Ministry of Forests at a space planning workshop and subsequent meetings. A space plan to optimize workflows was identified, informing critical design decisions.

The new centre showcases our expertise in collaborating with government clients, engaging stakeholders, and renewing a valuable and unique Provincial asset. It also highlights our ability to research, specify, and create a high-performance building where durability, safety, and security are paramount.
